Flooding in Adelaide 1917 |
|||
Description |
Adelaide and South Australia as a whole endured an extremely wet winter in 1917. Streets in the city and many suburbs were inundated because of poor drainage especially in areas near the River Torrens. Roads and some houses in low lying suburbs such as Fulham, Henley Beach and Grange were particularly affected. Solutions canvassed included a controversial proposal to construct a channel to the sea through the sandhills. The image dated 20 July 1917 shows flood waters in an unidentified area of Adelaide, around trees and power lines. Storms in Adelaide, the Hills and suburbs around 17 July were particularly severe. |
