Title
Flooded tram line, Adelaide 1917
Description

Adelaide and South Australia as a whole endured an extremely wet winter in 1917. Streets in the city and many suburbs were inundated because of poor drainage especially in areas near the River Torrens. Roads and some houses in low lying suburbs such as Fulham, Henley Beach and Grange were particularly affected. Solutions canvassed included a controversial proposal to construct a channel to the sea through the sandhills. The image dated 19 August shows a flooded tram line, probably on Henley Beach Road. On Tuesday, 21 August extreme weather conditions including extensive rains forced closure of the Henley Beach tram line around Lockleys and Fulham. (Advertiser, 22 August 1917, p6).

The State Library of South Australia has this image and a related one, identified as Henley Beach Road and the No 22 tram line (PRG 280/1/17/133; PRG 280/1/15/207)
