Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Flooded trenches, Western Front, during World War I. Two British soldiers in waders standing up to their knees in water in a flooded communications trench. The Allied trenches were generally lower and wetter than the German trenches. The constant water was not only uncomfortable for the men, but also caused the trench sides to subside.

Communications trenches were the main form of communication between the front-line and the reserve trenches. They were the route to take ammunition, men and supplies up to the front-line and bring casualties back.
[Original reads: 'A flooded communication trench.']
