Summary

[edit]
Description A worker replaces steel cable in floating oil containment booms at the beginning of his 12-hour night shift at the Point Cadet Decontamination Site, Biloxi, Mississippi. This worker was exposed to volatile organic solvents in the glues used to patch holes in booms. NIOSH was requested by BP to conduct health hazard evaluations (HHEs) on the Deepwater Horizon response workers to assess potential exposures and health effects. As part of these HHEs, NIOSH staff comprehensively evaluated working conditions on-shore and provided reports to BP with recommendations to improve protection for cleanup workers.
