Title |
Flint axehead of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete flint axehead of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. It is struck from a pale blue/grey to white flint, snapped at one end (blade end?) in antiquity. The axe is rectangular in form, pointed oval in cross-section, tapering towards the complete end (butt end?). Both faces have invasive and scaled flake removal, with iron staining visible in places. It measures 78.10mm in length, 52.53mm in width, 19.31mm in thickness, and 85.77g in weight.
This is an incomplete struck flint axe. The lack of a definite tranchet flake at the surviving end, and the old breaks removing the opposite end, make identification as a Mesolithic tranchet axe problematic. While this example may well be as early as the Mesolithic (c.10,000-4000 BC), a later, Neolithic (4000-2550 BC), date cannot be ruled out entirely. |
