Title
Flint axe
Description
English: A small tranchet axe made from a large flake, 89.2mm long, 46.8mm wide and 25.9mm thick. The implement is made of dark brown flint with numerous lighter and darker cherty inclusions; about 5% cortext remains. The upper, dorsal face, has multiple arrises; at least 7 flakes had previously been removed from the core but later retouching and possible flaking from use makes an exact count difficult. The ventral, lower face, has two large facets with again multiple scars from retouching and damage; these have removed the bulb of percussion/bulb scar. The visible bulb scars and percussion waves suggest a solt hammer technique was used. The proximal end shows signs of retouching including the removal of a transverse flake from the lower, ventral, face - suggesting the tool may be a mesolithic tranchet axe. The distal end may also have has a transverse flake removed from the lower, ventral, face although susequent removal of two longatudinal flakes makes this less clear. There is no clear sign of retouch on the ends; both ends have considerable numbers of small chips which may have removed retouch, and suggests they were both used in some percussive activity. According to a label attached to it the tool was found with "a pile of other flints and and clippings and had obviously fashioned these", unfortunately these were not collected. However the signs of wear suggest the tool was used and therefore if the debitage does relate to its manufacture it was made and then used on this site.
