Title
Flint Thames pick
Description
English: A Flint 'Thames Pick' type Tranchet axe dating to the Mesolithic or early- Neoltihic c. 9000-3300 BC.

Description:

The object is irregular sub-rectangular in plan with a possibly pointed butt and is roughly D-shaped in cross-section at the blade end and Triangular in cross section from the middle to the butt. It is slightly wasted around the middle of the object. The object has long flaking covering much of the object but with a patch of cortex from middle right side of the axe to the butt end of the top side. There is transverse flake on the bottom side creating an edge at the wide end, this technique is generally associated with the tranchet axe industries of the Mesolithic. The conchoidal flaking is mostly fairly muted suggesting the use of soft hammer technology, there are some patches of more pronounced fracturing which might indicate the use of both techniques in its production or later accidental or natural damage.

The object is mostly unpatinated and a mottled light off white colour on the bottom with some patche sof mottled lighter grey, the flint darkens to a mottled dark grey to the top and right of the axe. THe cortex is a dark grey colour.

Measurements: 134.42mm long, 42,8mm wide, 37.61mm thick and 420g in weight.
