Description Black smoke pours from the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5), at circa 1400 hrs on 4 June 1942, after she suffered hits from Japanese dive bombers during the Battle of Midway. Note the sailor in the foreground attempting to repair the wooden flight deck. The forward arresting wires can also be seen in the foreground.
