Summary
[edit]DescriptionFlight 93 section, 9-11 Memorial - Flickr - skinnylawyer.jpg |
Paying my respects at the 9/11 Memorial, which was dedicated in September 2011 on the tenth anniversary of the tragic events. United 93, heading from Newark Airport to San Francisco, was the last of the four flights to be hijacked and crashed on 11 September 2001. Thanks to a ground delay, it did not get on the way until about the time of American 11's crash into the World Trade Center. After the flight was hijacked, the delay allowed passengers to learn about the happenings elsewhere in the nation, and plot a counteroffensive against the hijackers. The terrorists chose to crash the plane into the ground in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, rather than taking chances with a passenger takeover. The bravery of the passengers and crew of United 93, which prevented the flight from reaching its intended target (either the White House or the Capitol), was honored, by renaming Newark Airport, the departure point of the flight, as Newark Liberty Airport. This portion lists the crewmembers' names; Jason Dahl was the Captain, LeRoy Homer was the First Officer, Sandy Bradshaw was the lead flight attendant, and the other flight attendants were Deborah Welsh, Lorraine Bay, CeeCee Lyles, and Wanda Green. Names at the memorial are arranged so that those with a similar affiliation would be listed together; for the four flights involved, the crewmembers are listed toward the left side next to the flight number, followed by passengers toward the right side. Upon request of surviving family members and friends, certain names (such as family members or close friends traveling or working together) were placed next to each other. Kiosks throughout the memorial, as well as 911memorial.org, allow visitors to look up the location of all groups of names, and also locate a specific name easily. |
