Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Visitor Center at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, as seen in December 2021. Designed by Paul Murdoch and the winner of the American Institute of Architects' award for Education Facility Design, the Flight 93 Memorial Visitor Center was described by the AIA as "a great example of poetic architecture in service of a central concept and experiential learning... beautiful in [its] representation of the story [it] tell[s]." Paradoxically, while the building is a focal point that's widely visible within the site itself (thanks to its prominent hilltop location), yet its design is unobtrusive and dutifully directs the visitor's attention back to the Memorial Plaza, Wall of Names, and crash site: it's bisected by a pedestrian walkway that roughly traces the airplane's flight path which, in turn, is lined with tall marble walls that obscure views of the rest of the site. Inside is a permanent exhibition that focuses on the Flight 93 story within the context of the larger terrorist attack.
