Changing from a ladder frame to a space frame only added an "A" to the 550's project number, but a proposed "K" shaped front torsion bar support, not actually installed, changed the 550A into a 718... Go figure! (Mild irony;) With a thorough-going, Teutonic distain for convention, the Porsche competition department referred to the 550A as the "1500", and the 718 as the "RSK", showing that they didn't take this stuff too seriously themselves. Admittedly, the RSK does have a different body shape than the 550A… but so did the original 917, the 917K, 917L, 917PA and 917K10 and 30….not to mention the pink pig! Body shape wasn't mechanical enough for a project number change, even 10 years later. DSC_0260 |
