Description

Construída estrategicamente na margem norte do Rio Tejo, entre 1514 e 1520, para defesa da barra de Lisboa, a Torre de Belém é uma das jóias da arquitectura do reinado de D. Manuel, uma síntese entre a torre de menagem de tradição medieval e os primeiros dispositivos aptos para resistir ao fogo de artilharia. Mantém algumas salas de utilização civil com as características abóbadas quinhentistas, a casamata para o disparo da artilharia e a memória dos cárceres que ali funcionaram desde finais do século XVI.

Está inscrita na lista do Património Mundial da UNESCO, é um ex-libris do património cultural português projectado em todo o mundo e é um dos elementos arquitectónicos que pontua a paisagem ribeirinha na zona monumental Ajuda-Belém.
