Summary
[edit]DescriptionFlickr - brewbooks - Skagit Gneiss.jpg |
Formation: Skagit Gneiss Rock Type: Highly metamorphosed gneiss ("nice") Found: Along Highway 20 Newhalem, Washington to Panther Creek) Extends north to British Columbia and south to Lake Chelan Gneiss Recipe for Skagit Gneiss - Have some colliding terranes bury sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks ( as much as 90,000 feet deep!) - Allow time to metamorphose at high temperatures and pressures. Be patient! - Add molten rock; hot water and then increase pressure. - Stew and shake for millions of years - Allow to cool. Let rise for another few million years. RESULT: The very complex, layered, folded and intruded rock formation visible in the highway cuts nearby.
