Summary
[edit]DescriptionFlickr - brewbooks - Petrified trunk of Araucarioxylon.jpg |
Petrified trunk of Araucarioxylon Ancestors of species in the genus Araucaria were the most dominant trees in the forests of the geologic past. Fallen trees which found their way into lakes or seas, became deeply buried in sediment. Minute quartz crystals (silica)precipitating out of ground water over millions of years coated the more durable parts of the wood, preserving the shape and arrangement of the cells. When all traces of wood had been replaced by silica the trunk was petrified. This specimen is about 35 millions years old. Donor: Director, Imperial Gardens of Vienna, 1878 i040707 271 |
