Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Cycads and zamias
Cycads and zamias are a group of 'living fossil' plants which have leaves resembling those of palms but they are not related to them. They are descendants of plants that flourished 260 million years ago. A total of about 120 species now survive throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. The plants are either female or male and bear large cones. The seeds, when leached of their toxicity, are a source of flour for native people.
Cone-bearing plants
In this group, plants such as pine produce their seeds in cones. The seeds develop on the surface of the scales that make up the cone and are said to be 'naked'. The name gymnosperms, meaning naked seed, is given to this group. Gymnosperms include the following divisions:
  Ginkgophyta – 1 species: 1 genus
  Pinophyta – c. 610 species: 57 genera
  Cycadophyta – c. 123 species: 10 genera.
The plants have male and female cones. The cones differ in shape and may be on the same plant or on plants of separate sex. Pollination by wind.
