DescriptionFlickr - Furryscaly - On the River.jpg |
I didn't even see this guy until he hopped. He's a Woodhouse's toad, Bufo woodhousii, I found on the Missouri River in North Dakota. Or more specifically, he is a Rocky Mountain toad, B. w. woodhousii, a subspecies of Woodhouse's toad. If you look close he has some grey scarring on his back from some sort of attack. Should I crop this? Yes or no? This toad may be known as Anaxyrus woodhousii in the future. Currently Anaxyrus is a subgenus of Bufo that contains many North American species. However, many recognize it as its own genus (Frost et al.) and the idea is apparently becoming more widely accepted. However, this reminds me of the unsuccessful revision of North American members of the frog genus Rana, and their proposed genus Lithobates (which was shot down). Currently the official genus for this toad is still Bufo. |
