Description

I watched this male ebony jewelwing, Calopteryx maculata, as he hunted small flying insects. It was pretty cool. Took me a while to figure out he was doing it. He'd fly out from his perch, zoom back around and land again...with a little bug in his mouth. When he was done munching it he'd repeat the maneuver.

Note that he's a damselfly, not a dragonfly. Best viewed large.

He's sexually dimorphic from the female seen here:
