Description Recently refurbished old pub on the corner of Canning Cross and Grove Lane, SE5. The pub is named after the Conservative politician George Canning [1770-1827], Foreign Secretary and briefly Prime Minister [he died in office]. He was famous for fighting a duel with his rival Lord Castlereagh in 1809; both survived; Canning's shot missed, but Castlereagh managed to wound Canning in the backside...
