Volunteer companies handle these equipments. Theyare uniformed and receive great praise when appearing at fire-mens parades throughout the country. Good houses for the ap-paratus also mark the progress of the town The Adams and United States Express Companies bothhave offices here and the service is such that no reasonable com-plaint can be made. In addition, an express messenger servicebetween here and New York has been carried on for the lasttwenty years, daily. So that business men and any others mayavail themselves of this convenience at a trifling cost. The Western Union and Postal Telegraph Companies oper-ate offices here for business throughout this country and cableservice to all parts of the world. Both local and long distance telephone companies have officeshere and accept business at reasonable rates. The business houses of the town are all substantially con-structed, and all kinds of business usually found in a place of thissize are conducted by up-to-date business people.

Of these, the Hunterdon County Democrat, establishedSeptember 5th, 1838, is the oldest. The other publications beingorganized at later dates, as follows: The Hunterdon Republicanin 1856 and the Democrat Advertiser in 1879. All these papersare up-to-date publications, and in addition to publishing theirweeklies, job printing of all descriptions is done by each. Theeditorial and business management of these papers is based uponbroad and liberal constructions and their pages are always opento civic possibilities of a progressive character.
