Title |
Flat Axe |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy Early Bronze Age flat axe (c. 2150-1500 B.C.), possibly of the Migdale type, made using an open cast technique. The axe is sub-rectangular in shape with a square butt end that is substantially corroded and incomplete. The axe is generally flat in profile; however there is a definite gradual thickening towards the centre of the body of the axe. The sides of the axe are also slightly rounded. The blade of the axe shows signs of a slight flare, suggesting a splayed crescent shaped blade. The blade however is badly corroded and incomplete. There are no signs on the body of the axe of ridges, stops or flanges.
The surface of the axe is dark, which is typical of south Wales axes, it is also substantially polished and abraded due to water movement, having been found on a beach. As a result of the poor condition of the surface we can not tell if the axe was originally incised or had cast decoration. |
