Description

#1 of 3. For whatsthatpicture, Ealing's most notable resident :)

Real photo postcard. Postally used. Stamp intact. Cancellation date of 1 August, 1913.

Bought from an eBay seller in Twickenham, United Kingdom.

Location: Google Maps Street View

Helpfully, the street name is emblazoned on the lamppost! Whether Fiveways Court (see Streetview and navigate to view the front door) is the historical name of the building or only a recent one is unclear.

Sent to A. Knee Esq., 31 Catherine Street, Swindon. The message reads: "I thought you would like this view of our house rather nice one isn't it."

The postcard was probably sent to Archibald Edward Knee (1892-1916), a young GWR wagon painter at Swindon Works who lived with his parents at 31 Catherine Street, one of eight siblings. Sadly, Lance Corporal Knee of the 1st Wilts Regiment died of wounds in May 1916 while serving on the Western Front. - swindoninthegreatwar.wordpress.com/archibald-edward-knee/. It could also have been sent to Arthur Knee, but I'm not sure of his address. It's unlikely to have been sent to the much younger Ashley (ie. Master, not Esquire). - www.1911census.co.uk/search/results4.aspx?x=1152114699

I wonder if the iron lattice-work on the fence was removed for scrap during WWII?
