The long and theshort of it is that they are spoiling the native, andthis is in my opinion little less than criminal, and Icannot understand the apathy of the Governmentwhich permits it. I have visited the Sobat RiverMission Station with ladies, and we had to enter thehouse of the missionaries over the prostrate bodiesof stark naked natives who were lying on the step,and who might not be disturbed or awakened. Ihave sat at the table inside the house, with a row ofblack heads straining in to watch what was going on ;and I have listened to the eulogies of the mistakenhosts, who pointed to the spectators with pride asexamples of the trust and confidence with which theyregarded their tutors. There are women inthe Sobat Mission Station, brave American women,who are consecrating their lives to the service of theirreligion, ministering to the deluded blacks of CentralAfrica; is it not a burning shame that they shouldbe allowed to waste their energies in this manner, whentwo words from the Government would in all prob-ability serve to turn their endeavours into practicalchannels which would be of use in the history of thecountry ? The whole system is wrong; but it willbe allowed to drift on, until the time that the pupilsare brought to such a degree of self-satisfaction thatthey will become a danger to the country. Then thebrake will be put on, and the whole thing pronounceda failure. Little good is being done to the natives who comeunder the influence of this mission, while a greatdeal of harm is being accomplished.
