Title
Five mesolithic micro implements
Description
English: An assemblage of five small flint micro implements dating from the Mesolithic periods, c. 7000-4000 BC.

All five are formed of the same dark grey black flint:

1) A blade formed on a secondary flake, with a tiny area of cortex surviving. Triangular in cross section, rectangular in shape, very slender and almost transparent at the cutting edges, which have been created  using abrupt retouch. Slightly larger removals are present at the distal end, giving a slightly waisted appearance. 16mm length, 13.1mm width, 3.2mm thickness,  weight 0.79g.

2) A microlith formed on a very dark grey almost black flint, which has become almost blue in colour due to a white patina affecting its shade. It is triangular in plan and cross section, with a crescentic appearance, curving slightly to the right, to a point which is now broken. 18.2mm length, 8.5mm width, 2.2mm thickness, weight 0.33g.

3) An elongated slender microlith formed on a mid grey flint, with white mottling and some iron staining present. Triangular in cross section, elongated isosceles triangle in plan. Abrupt very fine retouch present. 23.1mm length, 7.9mm width, 3.2mm thickness, weight 0.55g.

4) A slender microlith formed on a secondary flake of mid grey flint, with a tiny area of white cortex at the distal end. Triangular in cross section, elongated isosceles triangle in plan, with a sharp point that survives. Fine retouch present, one removal possibly erroneous towards the proximal end on the left side, which has left a marked notch. 20.2mm length, 8.9mm width, 4.9mm thickness, weight 0.67g.

5) A more rectangular microlith formed on a tertiary flake of brownish grey flint. Rectangular in plan with a slightly tapered proximal end, triangular in cross section. Abrupt retouch present. 19.2mm length,  11.9mm width, 3.7mm thickness, weight 0.65g.

Total weight: 2.97g. Butler (2005: 88) notes that microliths were used in a number of different tools and weapons, most frequently as the tip/point of a wooden shaft or as a number of barbs along the sides of an arrow shaft.
