The harbour of Fiskieiði/Hvalbiareiði.
Summary
[edit]DescriptionFiskieið also called Hvalbiareiði in Hvalba Suðuroy Faroe Islands.JPG |
English: This place has two names, some call it Hvalbiareiði and some call it Fiskieiði. It used to be a fish harbour for the people of Hvalba. Hvalba is one of the norhternmost villages in Suðuroy, Faroe Islands. There is a natural harbour in Fiskieiði, but it was improved first in 1895 by Niels L. Arge from Argir near Tórshavn. His father was from Hvalba. Men from Hvalba had tried to use concrete on the cliff, but it didn't last, so they sent for Niels L. Arge, who was called Gamli Smiður á Argjum; and he came and made a work which lasted. In 1924 the great work was done by laying stones on top of each other etc. Jens Marius Poulsen from Skopun was chief of this great work. Even if the sea sometimes gets very rough here, the harbour which was built in 1924 is still in good shape. There are very few boats now on Fiskieiði, but some decades ago it was an important harbour for Hvalba and 23 boats were there and the same amount of boat houses. Hvalba is located on an isthmus in the northern part of Suðuroy, and the village has harbours on both sides: on the east coast and on the west coast. Since the boats got engines the western harbour at Fiskieiði/Hvalbiareiði lost its importance. It is now mostly used for leisure trips and tourism.
Hvalbingar hava róð út her langt afturi í tíðini. Viðurskiftini hava ikki verði so góð, tá teir bert høvdu náttúrligu havnina at brúka. Tí betraður teir um viðurskiftini á helluni. Teir royndu at stoypa um helluna, men tað helt ikki. Teir sendu so boð eftir Niels L. Arge, eisini nevndur Gamli Smiðurin á Argjum, og tá bar til. Hann stoypti so tað helt. |
