Summary
[edit]DescriptionFishing trawler (3730089942).jpg | A fishing trawler all ready for long days of trawling out of sight of land. Trawling is a form of fishing where a large net is trawled (pulled) along the sea bed. Fishing vessels drag trawling gear along the bottom, in search of shellfish and bottom-feeding fish, leaving a wake of destruction along the seabed. This type of fishing is indiscriminate and different species might end caught up but in reality they are not good for human consumption. These trawling nets damage the sea ecosystem especially when it comes to sea mammals. Many a time fishermen find dead dolphins in the nets. In many countries trawling is tightly restricted with the size of the net’s holes specified by law. The reason being to permit the smaller and immature fish to escape and grow bigger. Today’s trawlers are fitted with sophisticated equipment to track fish and other equipment to use in case of emergencies as fishing in the open seas is not an easy thing but fraught with danger and full of hardship. Many a fisherman went out fishing but for one reason or another never returned to harbour leaving a family to bereave him - MALTA |
