| Description |
English: Fishing smacks and a coble at Amble Three fishing boats moored against the quay at Amble. The boat nearest the camera is a coble, an open vessel unique to the north east coast of England. Usually cobles are clinker-built but this one appears to be of carvel construction. Other characteristics of cobles include shallow draft for landing and launching from beaches, twin keels, high bow to cope with heavy seas and launching into surf, a steeply raked transom, and a tarpaulin shelter instead of a cabin. Originally, cobles were sailed (with a simple squaresail rig) but most are now motorised. |
