English: Title: Fishing in a Famine District of Roumania. "All one Sunday morning these women using improvised dip nets fished in a little Roumanian brook, and caught about 4 tiny fish about the size of sardines" declared the American Red Cross man who took this photo. There is a food shortage in Roumania, and whatever can be added to the family bill of fare, even though it happens to be a small fish or so, is very welcome. This is an old Roumanian sport as it happens. But only in times of severe food shortage, such as the present, do so many women endeavor to catch fish in one small section of a stream. After this fishing party had been working for about an hour, the brook was a mud puddle. The Red Cross man was as surprised as the Roumanians, whenever a fish was caught. Throught the American Red Cross large quantities of badly needed drugs and supplies of food have been distributed in many Roumanian famine and disease centers. The Americans are very popualar in Roumania now. It was from the U.S. that aid came in the hour of greatest need after the Germans had left Roumania a famine stricken and diseased area in the near east. Bulgar, Turk and German took part in the despiolation of this country
