This fossil is also known as Receptactulites. Receptaculitids are an extinct group of shallow-water marine organisms that have been reported from most of the Paleozoic (Ordovician to Permian). They have a calcareous skeleton with a broadly inflated discoidal shape having a sunflower-like pattern. The taxonomic affiliations of receptaculitides are uncertain. These fossils have been referred to as sponges or algae. Modern researchers seem to agree that receptaculitids are calcareous algae. More specific taxonomic assignments remain controversial.
