Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Firth at low tide This is the Solway Firth at low tide as seen from Port Ling. In the far distance can be seen the hills of the Lake District. A brown line can be seen which appears to be across the Solway. It is, in fact, VERY close to the Scottish mainland and is at the head of the bay. The line is the Barhourie Bank - a very dangerous sandbank which has claimed a great number of ships. Many have lost their lives on the quicksands of the bank before rescue could reach them. Locals have collected cockles as a living on the bank for years but today it is the scene of illegal cockle fishing.
