Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1890 and expanded to its present size in 1950, this Gothic Revival-style church was originally built for the Northern Methodist Episcopal Church of Dandridge, with the congregation having split from the Southern Methodist Episcopal Church of Dandridge in the mid-19th Century. The Southern Methodist Episcopal Church was destroyed by the creation of Douglas Lake in 1942-1943, leading to the congregations merging into a single congregation at the Northern Methodist Episcopal Church, which was expanded to accommodate the enlarged congregation after World War II. The building features an older rear section with a red brick exterior, a front-gable roof, double-hung windows with gothic arched transoms and shutters, a front door with a gothic arched transom, an educational wing to the west of the original section with a red brick and painted concrete block exterior, nine-over-nine double-hung windows and a side-gable roof, and a newer Classical Revival-style sanctuary with twelve-over-twelve double-hung windows, a portico with doric columns and a front pediment, a tower with quoins, an octagonal belfry, and a spire, a front door with a decorative trim surround, including a broken pediment, and gothic arched stained glass windows on the side facades of the sanctuary. The oldest section of the building is a contributing structure in the Dandridge Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The building remains in use by the First United Methodist Church of Dandridge.
