Description
The first Garfield Elementary School building was constructed in 1882. It was demolished circa 1950 and replaced by a new school building that opened in 1955. The new Garfield School building was renovated beginning in 1987 and re-opened as part of the Martin Luther King Center for the Performing and Cultural Arts on October 17, 1989. The former school houses the Elijah Pierce Gallery.
