Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The First Commonwealth Bank building, 111 South Main Street, Greensburg, Pennsylvania, July 2022. A prominent landmark in the city's NRHP-listed downtown business district, this was part of the first wave of tall commercial buildings to be erected in Greensburg: it rises to a height of nine stories, dates to 1925, and was designed by prolific local architect Paul Bartholomew in a timely Neoclassical style. Note the division of the façade into brick- and stone-clad portions, the latter located on the bottom and featuring floor-to-ceiling windows looking into the lobby, topped by elegant arches studded with ancones in place of keystones. Ancones also feature in the ornamentation scheme of the twin entrances at the far sides of the building, which also include swan's-neck pediments crowning the architraves. The brick-faced upper portion is relatively less ornate, but does sport stylized Corinthian pilaster strips that extend vertically from the third floor to the sixth, ending at a Greek-style frieze adorned with triglyphs and topped consecutively by a dentil row and projecting cornice. Aside from the succession of financial institutions that have served as the building's main occupant (the First National Bank of Greensburg until 1970, then the Southwest National Bank and finally First Commonwealth), the upper floors have been home to a multiplicity of other office tenants, trending heavily toward medical and dental practices.
