Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Multiple fires raged across parts of drought-stricken Chile in March 2016, threatening unique natural sites and prompting the government to issue a national fire alert.

Wildfires in three protected areas - China MuMaerta National Reserve, Nalca Lolco National Reserve, and Conquillio National Park - had damaged over 11,000 acres by March 24. Of particular concern in these reserves is the welfare of the "monkey puzzle tree", Araucaria araucana, a type of pine tree that lives to a thousand years old. Unique and ancient specimens are at risk from the blazes.

Early autumn rains did not initially help quench the fires, but firefighters are hoping that cooler, wetter weather will assist with efforts to contain the blazes. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on March 29. Centered on the Araucania region, several dozen red hot spots mark areas where the thermal bands of the instrument detected areas of high heat or, in this case, marks individual fires.
