Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On March 10, 2022, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of dozens of fires burning in Mayanmar (Burma).

Each red “hot spot” marks an area where the thermal bands on the MODIS instrument detected high temperatures. When combined with typical smoke, as in this image, such hot spots mark actively burning fire. Haze, most likely caused by smoke from fires across Southeast Asia, hangs over the landscape and is especially thick in the south.

Although it’s not possible to tell the cause of a fire simply by looking at a satellite image, the location and number of fires as well as the time of years suggest these fires are primarily agricultural in nature. Farmers often light and manage fires to clear old crop stubble, prepare ground for planting new crops, manage brush, clear new land, or renew pasture. Some of the blazes may also be accidental forest fires, which are not unusual in this area during the dry season.
