On August 6, 2017, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite flew over Australia’s Northern Territory and acquired a true-color image that showed multiple fires burning in the region.

English: On August 6, 2017, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite flew over Australia’s Northern Territory and acquired a true-color image that showed multiple fires burning in the region. Red hotspots can be seen along the coastal lands along mainland Northwest Territory as well as a few on Melville and Tiwi Islands. Each hotspot is an area where the thermal bands on the instrument detected high temperatures. When combined with typical smoke, such hotspots mark actively burning fires. Gray smoke pours from these hotspots and blows across the Timor Sea. In the north, white cloud appears to be blown in streaks, along with the smoke.
