English: Missouri Athletic Club fire wreckage at the northwest corner of Fourth Street and Washington Avenue. Boatmen's Bank occupied lower floor of the building.
The Missouri Athletic Club was founded in 1903 by Charles Henry Genslinger. Genslinger, who has already founded similar such clubs in New Orleans and New York, saw the need in St. Louis for an amateur businessmen’s athletic club. During the 1904 Olympic Games members of the club competed in boxing, wresting, water polo, swimming, and track. The original club was housed in the Boatman’s Bank building, seen here. In 1914 a devastating fire destroyed the building, the Missouri Athletic Club with it. 30 members and guests of the club lost their lives in the fire.
