Summary
[edit]DescriptionFire damper clusterf.jpg | Fire Damper floor penetration in a two hour fire-resistance rated concrete floor slab. North American fire dampers require a gap around the outside of the damper, usually 1/8" per lineal foot of width. Without that, they can jam. This gap of course invites smoke migration around the outside of the damper, even if the inside is "smoke-rated". Caulking the gap up can cause a heat build-up that can cause the damper to collapse. A common deficiency is mis-sizing the openings so the sheet metal lip on the outside can't cover the hole. This is a very common code violation in North America. The key to the solution is a field check of each installed configuration against the certification listing that was supposed to be used. |
