Fire engine book illustration

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Illustration from Jan van der Heiden's book showing the old and the new engines. The first book on fire engines was written by Jan van der Heiden and his son Jan, and published in 1690. This is the second printing which appeared in 1735. The short title in Dutch is Slang-Brand-Spuiten.

Jan van der Heiden (1637-1712) was a distinguished artist and also Superintendent of the Amsterdam Fire Brigade. He introduced the use of the delivery hose, made of leather, an invention which made the fire engine much more effective than it had been with the swivelling gooseneck delivery jet, by enabling fires to be attacked at close quarters. The cistern was connected by flexible hose with a canvas trough in a wooden stand which was sited on a canal bank and kept filled with water raised in buckets. This obviated the use of a long bucket chain. Van der Heiden later introduced the wired suction hose, which dipped into the canal. He was the illustrator as well as the author of this book, which is exhibited open at the plate showing the fire in 1673 in Amsterdam at which the new pumps were used for the first time and the old pumps for the last time.

There are 25 plates, which are captioned in Dutch and in French. Plate 41 from Fire fighting appliances, the descriptive catalogue of the collection in the Science Museum, London.
