English: Hodge's steam fire engine 1840. The coloured drawing shows the first self-propelled fire engine, which was also the first steam fire engine to be built in America. It was constructed by P. R. Hodge (No. 101) at New York in 1840.
When the scene of operations was reached, one end of the engine was raised till the driving wheels were off the ground, when they acted as fly-wheels. The horizontal pumps were placed tandem with the steam cylinders, and were directly driven by the piston rods produced backwards. The artist, date, size, and scale are the same as for No. 22, but the mount is signed by Paul R. Hodge.
