Braithwaite and Ericsson’s fire engine 1829-30

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Braithwaite and Ericsson’s steam fire engine 1829-30. This coloured drawing represents the first steam fire engine, which was constructed in London by Messrs. John Braithwaite and John Ericsson in 1829-30.

Although the engine was worked gratuitously at several fires in London with great success, it met with determined opposition. Three or four similar engines were, however, built for Liverpool and abroad, but it was not until 1852 that steam was adopted in London, when a floating engine was converted to steam working.

The engine had a boiler and two direct-acting steam pumps of 64 in (16°5 cm) diameter and 16 in (40°6 cm) stroke. It was mounted on wheels for horse traction. The fire box was water-jacketed and was provided with a forced draught by a mechanical bellows and the waste gases issued from the funnel behind the driver’s seat. The engine threw 150 gallons (680 I) of water per minute to a height of 90 ft (30 m). The drawing measuring 37 m x 65 cm, is to 1:16 scale, and is signed G.Pooley and dated 1869. The mount is signed by the inventor John Braithwaite.. Plate 16 from Fire fighting appliances, the descriptive catalogue of the collection in the Science Museum, London.
