Description
English: Phillips manual fire engine, 1766. This is a small compact machine which differs in several respects from Newsham's. It was made by Samuel Phillips and was presented by ‘Benn. Way, Esqr., to the Parish of Denham, Bucks, 1766,’ as an inscription testifies. The engine has two single-acting pump barrels, 4 in (10 cm) diameter by 8 in (20 cm) stroke, with a tall air vessel between them. These are placed in their casing longitudinally on the centre line of the reservoir instead of transversely as in Newsham's engine. The piston-rods are guided and driven by forked connecting rods from the rocking shaft. The pump handles are also placed transversely, thus increasing the stability of the machine when operated, and are arranged to fold up so as to reduce the lateral space required for storage.
