Title
finger ring (intaglio)
Description
English: Silver Roman finger ring of Henig's Type II, with plain oval hoop, D-shaped in section, broad shoulders and flat, widened bezel. At the centre of the bezel is a red intaglio, probably made of carnelian, with an engraved cockerel facing left. The cockerel was associated with Mercury, the god of merchants, travelers and those that transported goods. Rings of this type are dated from the 1st to the 2nd century.

The closest comparanda for the intaglio on the database, a silver ring with a flat bezel holding a standing cockerel intaglio of carnelian, is in record CAMHER-15EF75 which has the reference Henig 1978, no 679.

Similar finger rings recorded on the database, but with different intaglios, include: NLM-74D2F2 and <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/402164" title="View details for DENO-BF9800">DENO-BF9800</a>.

Bishop (1996) illustrates an intaglio with a cockerel pulling a cart (supporting the transportation association with Mercury) that is made of red jasper on page 48, fig.28, no.274, which was in a context that was no later than the Antonine period of the 2nd century AD.
