Summary
[edit]DescriptionFindlay Street, West End, Cincinnati, OH (27229539587).jpg | This former mixed-use building on Findlay Street in Cincinnati’s West End is now home to the First Liberty Baptist Church congregation. Constructed in the 19th Century, this Italianate building originally would have been a neighborhood store, but with the surrounding urban decay and downturn in the neighborhood’s fortunes during the 20th Century, the building has instead become home to a storefront church, which, while not the most ideal use for such a space, does at least keep it occupied. Today, the building is within eyeshot of the Stanley Row Towers, one of a handful of public housing projects from the 1960s that still remains in the city, and they cast a shadow over the building and neighborhood both literally and metaphorically, as the poor decisions made using urban renewal funds in the mid-20th Century still affect the area and have helped further its decline. The lot across the street is also indicative of another trend, a lot of demolitions of historic properties have occurred in this portion of the West End due to neglect, and until recently, very few people were doing much of anything to save the buildings here, which include a cross section of historic housing types, as well some of the most significant residential structures in the city. |
