Summary
[edit]DescriptionFindlay Street, West End, Cincinnati, OH (27229538307).jpg | These historic buildings are located along Findlay Street near Linn Street in Cincinnati’s West End, adjacent to an infamous playground that had to be demolished because it was being used for an unintended purpose. Constructed in the 19th Century, all of these buildings except the one with the mansard roof would fit under the broad classification of the urban vernacular Italianate style, defined by the use of ornate bracketed cornices at the top of the front facade, and the lack of a prominent roof above the cornice, which usually comes with ornate window hoods, trim, detailing, and symmetrical or largely symmetrical detailing. The addition of a mansard roof would make said structure an urban vernacular Second Empire, and was often either done when the building was initially built to provide more usable space inside the dwelling, or as a later addition to add more living space to the often-cramped attics of these buildings. Today, though some of these buildings appear to be vacant and neglected, others are lived-in and cared for, showing off how different property owners treat the buildings in the area, and that these buildings often appear quite different side-by-side depending on how well they are cared for. |
