In the Speyer home on Fifth Avenue among a multitudeof fine paintings is a portrait of Mr. Speyer, painted by anEast Side boy who was in the art class of the Eldridge Uni- (275) FINANCIAL GIANTS versity Settlement. This portrait was presented to Mr. Speyerin commemoration of the completion of twenty years servicein behalf of charitable institutions. Mr. Speyer is an optimist. He believes in his fellow-menand in the future of his country. He played a courageous partin the firm of Speyer & Co. in supplying Collis P. Huntingtonwith many millions of dollars to develop our Western empireby traversing it with the Central Pacific and Southern Pacificrailroads. He had confidence in its first strength and pouredcapital into the development of this youthful country. TheSpeyers have maintained a reputation for more than a centuryfor protecting their clients.
