Summary
[edit]DescriptionFinal concord on land in Lincoln 31 Edw. I.jpg |
English: A specimen of final concord, or fine of lands, dealing with a messuage with appurtenances in the County of Lincoln, dating to 1303. The two vertical blocks of text, separated by a vertical wavy line, are duplicate copies of the final concord, each of which would go to the separate parties. The bottom portion, known as the foot of the fine, would be enrolled by the court so as to serve as a record of the settlement. The whole document is a chirograph, drawn up on a single piece of parchment, cut with a wavy rather than straight line, with the cut proceeding across words (usually, as in this case, "CIROGRAPHUM") written by the chirographer to work as proof that the original pieces were part of the same document. |

Original final concord dated 9 June 1303 ("in eight days of Holy Trinity" 31 Edw. I), found in the Muniment Room of the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln, "Dij, 78/I, nos. 94 and 95". Scanned from the frontispiece of C. W. Foster (1920), Final Concords of the County of Lincoln, vol. 2 (Lincoln Record Society: Horncastle). |
Author |
Original chirographer unknown. Final concord was between Richard de Rothewell and Richard de Stretton, querents by William Vapurnent, and Gilbert and Ivetta le Glovere, deforciants. Proceedings were before Justices Ralph de Hengham, William de Bereford, Elias de Bekingham, Peter Malorre, William Howard, and Lambert de Trikingham. Book was edited by C.W. Foster (1866–1935) and published by the Lincoln Record Society. |
Licensing
[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. ![]() |
