| Description | U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District construction crews at the new Folsom Dam auxiliary spillway lowered six bulkhead gates into place Jan. 26, 2015. The massive gates, approximately 24 feet wide by 39 feet tall, will primarily hang in the open position but can be closed to allow maintenance to be done on the six Tainter gates, which will help control water releases through the spillway. All six Tainter gates have been installed, but work on the remainder of the spillway including the approach channel, which connects the spillway to the reservoir, as well as the chute and stilling basin, which help guide water into the American River below are still under construction. The spillway project is scheduled to be ready for use by October 2017. (U.S. Army photo by Seth Frank/Released) |
