Description Native perennial tufted sedge with compressed culms 20–80 cm tall, 1.5–3 mm diam and arising from a very short rhizome. Upper leaves are 2–10 cm long and 0.5–1.5 mm wide; lower leaves are reduced to sheaths; ligules are a dense fringe of short hairs. Flowerheads are simple or head-like, with 1–10 (rarely to 25) solitary spikelets, on branches to 3 cm long; involucral bract leaf-like, erect and usually shorter than the flowerhead. Spikelets are rusty brown ovoid to oblong-ovoid. Stamens 3. Style 2-fid, densely ciliate. Nut biconvex, obovoid, 1–1.2 mm long, ± smooth, ± shining and pale to dark brown. Flowering is from spring–summer. Grows in brackish or fresh water swamps; north from the Sydney region.
