Summary
[edit]DescriptionFilling the lock at Swarkestone, Derbyshire - geograph.org.uk - 1553745.jpg |
English: Filling the lock at Swarkestone, Derbyshire The locks on this section of the Trent and Mersey Canal are wide enough for two narrow-boats side by side, and this one raises (or drops) the water level by 10ft 11in (3.33 metres). As can be seen in the image, the water is entering the chamber with enormous ferocity despite the lock being already more than half full. There are two ground paddles, and two gate paddles. The gate paddles operate large square trapdoors in the gate, which can be seen clearly in the picture, and must NOT be opened until the lock is more than half full if boats are in the lock. The force of water passing through these gate paddles is so great that to do so could be very dangerous. |
