Description

Fille De Shanghai [c1870] Raimund Von Stillfried-Ratenicz [RESTORED]. I did minimal spotting on this extremely clean image, increased contrast and separated out the background a bit more; I also removed a backdrop floor juncture line as I found it distracting, then did the standard edge repair. I also smoothed the granulation in the face and hands, then brought the skin tone from both areas to a closer match. The original image, along with a large volume of Baron Von Stillfried-Ratenicz's beautiful work, can be found at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art's on line collection at this link: www.metmuseum.org/Collections/search-the-collections/288487

Baron Raimund Von Stillfried-Ratenicz, originally from Austria, had moved to the Orient, living, working and traveling there for a good number of years. He learned photography working alongside one of the premiere names of photographic history, Felice Beato, later buying out Beato's collection when the latter departed from the far east. Thereafter his thriving business not only created wonderful photographs (targeted primarily for the European collectors market), but taught an entire generation of Japanese photographers. Upon his retirement, he sold his business to another one of Beato's proteges, famed Japanese photographer, Kusakabe Kimbei. Photography during the late 1800's was a craft not for the faint hearted. Von Stillfried-Ratenicz worked mainly with wet plates and albumen prints, a very challenging medium that did not easily forgive mistakes. To repeatedly produce such beautiful images required not only skill, dedication and an excellent grasp of the limited technology at hand, but also an unending supply of patience, especially in the production of hand tinted prints. For a better understanding of how important Raimund Von Stillfried-Ratenicz was not only in terms of east Asian photography, but in overall recording of history, visit this link: www.slv.vic.gov.au/latrobejournal/issue/latrobe-76/t1-g-t...
